    学情分析

    刚刚进入高中不久的孩子,有些还比较羞涩,有些因为怕说错而不敢开口,可能课堂气氛不是很活跃。同时班上大部分学生自主学习习惯较差,对老师依赖程度较高。口语和写作是学生的一大难题,需要进行更叫细致的引导,激发学生的兴趣,在教学的设计上需更加贴近他们的日常生活,激励他们踊跃参与。

    教学目标

    Get students to know how to read emails;

    Improve their reading  speaking and writing ability;

    Get students to understand health is more important than appearance, know the scientific way in losing weight, and treat beauty and health in a right way.

    教学重难点

    Train students' reading speaking  and writing ability;

    Enable students to get the main points of each emali and make a summary writing of the first email.

    Get students to treat beauty in a right way.

    Step 1 lead-in(3minutes)


    Show a video in which a woman is doing exercise. Play the video and then say :

    How does she  look like?

    What is she doing? (Ask  students to answer the questions together.)


    How can she lose weight?

    Could you give her some suggestions?(Give students two minutes to discuss with their partners and then ask some to give their opinions.  Then show five slides to present four ways to lose weight.)

    Then say Nowadays many people want to lose weight.  Are these right ways to lose weight? Today we are going to study 3 emails about Amy's story.


    Step 2 Reading strategy(2minutes)


    How to read emails. (skim the material on the screen and ask students to pay attention to the title column: date from to and subject.)

    Step 3 Fast reading(5minutes)


    Skim the text  to get the general idea of the article.


    Match the main idea.


    Step 4 Detailed reading (20 minutes)

    The first email.(ask students to read the email carefully)

    Answer the questions and tell us where you find your answers.

    1)How does Amy lose weight now?

    She loses weight by taking weight-loss pills.

    2)  After changing the way of losing weight, what happens to her?

    She has lost 7 kg but she doesn't feel energetic.

    3) What did Amy's mother tell her?

    Her mother tells her not to take weitht-loss pills because they are dangerouse and she tells her health is the most important thing.

    Then ask students to find the key sentences in this email (Show paragraphs 2-3 on the screen )and then restate the key points with students.

    After that , give them 4 minutes to write their summary writing about this email.  Then ask 2 students to prestent their writing.                   

    Then show them the example.

    Example:

    The email mainly tells us that instead of going to the gym, Amy manages to lose 7kg by taking weight-loss pills . But she doesn't feel well. She keeps being told health is the most important thing.


    The second email(play the tape, then ask the studenst to finish the exercises on the screen.)

    Choose the best answer.(check their answers and lead them to find the information in the email)

    Then show five pictures  (do exercise in a gym/take weight-loss pills/lose 7kg/an ambulance/in hospital)


    The third email(ask the studensts to read the email together, then fill in the blanks)

    Step 5 Consolidation(6 minutes)

          Ask students to fill in the blanks accoring to the three emails

    My friend Amy in Canada used to go to the gym three times a week. She was ashamed(1) of her body and wanted to lose weight. Going to the gym was a good way for her to  stay fit. However, later she stopped going to the gym after(2) knowing (know) another way to stay slim. She started taking weight-loss pills (3)called(call)Fat-less,(4) which really worked. She became much slimmer as time went by. But sometimes she did not feel so(5) energitic (energy). Her mother suggested she stop taking them because she considered (6)them(they )to be dangerous. Amy did not listen to her mother and then she suffered from liver failure. The pills contained a harmful chemical that caused her liver to fail. The pills were going to (7)completely(complete) destroy her life if she continued taking them. Luckily, she stopped taking them after she  (8)was taken(take) to the hospital where she receivered (9)medical (medicine)treatment.

         Amy is now recovering from liver failure. She now follows her doctor's advice and exercises for at least half an hour daily.

         Amy's story tells us that we should not be embarrassed about our weight. It also tells us that we should not try to become thinner through going on (10)a diet or taking weight-loss pills

    After this, show a slide to explain the meaning of  Dying to be thin: Amy wants to be thin badly.

                                                                                                                  Amy nearly(几乎)dies because of losing weight.

    Step 6 Discussion(7minutes)

    1 What is true beauty?(Briefly explain your opinion.)

    Appearance(外表)?

    A beautiful soul(灵魂)?

    ( Ask students to discuss with their partners for 3 minutes. Then ask them to share their idea and why they think so.)

    Suggested answers(show 4 pictures): study hard\ pick up the rubbish\offer your seats to the old\donate blood

    How can you make yourself more beautiful?



    Step 7 Summary and homework(2minutes)

      Suppose one of your classmates is over-weight, she/he is dying to be thin. Write a letter to her/him to give her/him some useful advice.
