    学情分析

    The topic of this unit is closely related to students' daily life. This article is a narrative, written by a Chinese senior high school student, who talked about his school life in the UK. He mentioned different aspects of his school life in the UK, including host family, class size, courses, homework, school lunch and clubs, etc. There are only four new words in this article, so it won't be very difficult for students to understand it. By reading this article, students will be able to know more about school life in the UK and describe what their school life is like. By comparing school life in the UK and in China, students will be able to understand cultural similarities and differences better, enhance their cultural awareness, show their respect to culture diversity and be proud of our native culture.

    Senior one students are struggling to get used to their high school life and their studies, and they may have mixed feelings towards their new school life.Senior one students has already mastered enough adjectives to describe their feelings towards their new school life, but most of them didn't accumulate specific examples in their school life. Besides, new teachers and new classmates may result in their shyness in class, so many of them may not be able to express themselves properly in class.

    By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

    1. understand the main idea and structure of the article School life in the UK;

    2. talk about their high school life now;

    3. master the structure and writing feature of a paragraph, and imitate a paragraph about our school clubs by employing what has been learned

    4. talk the similarities and differences between school life in the UK and in China and express their attitude towards school life in the UK and in China.

    Activity 1 Lead-in

    Teacher greets the students and shows a short video 'School life in CDFLS', then asks them to answer the following question:

    How was your first month in Changde Foreign Language School?

    Activity 2 Title prediction

    Teacher asks the students to answer the following question:

    Can you predict what aspects might be included in the article?

    Activity 3 Scanning

    Teacher asks students to scan the passage and answer the following questions:

       1) How many aspects of school life in the UK are mentioned in this article?

       2) What are they?

    Activity 4 Reading comprehension

    Teacher guides the students to read the article again, find answers to the following questions and fill in the missing information:

    ① How many parts can this article be divided into?

    ② What's the main idea of each part?

    Teacher asks students to read paragraph 1 carefully, and choose the best answer to each question.

    Activity 5 Understanding the writing feature of paragraph 6

    Teacher leads students to review the structure of the whole passage and ask them which part they like best.

    Pay attention to paragraph 6 and think about the following questions.

    After school, there were many clubs to join. The one that attracted me most was the Rugby Club. we played once a week, and it was great fun. Also, I enjoyed acting in the Theatre Club. I still have photos of myself acting in William Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream. Joining clubs was a great way to meet British students and make friends with them.

     Then, teacher invites some students to present their writing to the whole class.

    Activity 7 Reflection

    Teacher asks students to discuss the following questions in groups:

    1) Some people think that school life in the UK is better than that in China. What is your opinion now?

    Activity 8 Homework

    1. Read the handouts about paragraph development and finish the exercise.

    2. Write a paragraph about similarities and differences between school life in the UK and in China.

    3. Search for information about school life in different countries.
