    学情分析

           牛津译林新版英语教材Module 1, Unit 2, Extended Reading 的文章Mama and Her Bank Account 是改编自美国作家Kathryn Forbes 的同名短篇故事书籍《妈妈的银行账户》中的一个小故事。这本书描绘了上个世纪时期一个挪威家庭移民美国旧金山后的生活。书中从孩子的视角描绘了17个温馨的小故事,这个移民家庭来到旧金山后的生活较拮据,也遇到了很多困难,但一家人在妈妈的影响下始终以智慧和坚毅面对着每天的挫折和挑战。只要有妈妈在,家人就充满了战胜困难、共渡难关的勇气。《妈妈的银行账户》是书中的第一个小故事,虽然生活拮据,经济不富足,但妈妈精打细算,总是使这个家庭维持生活。这个家庭有6口人,包括爸爸、妈妈、姐姐Christine, 哥哥Nels, 妹妹Dagmar,以及作者本人。每次计划好开支足够应付当月的支出后,妈妈会提到他们不需要去自己在城里大银行里的存款账户;当遇到经济困难时,妈妈会鼓励大家想办法,互帮互助,这样就可以不去动用大银行里的存款。20年后,作者才明白,原来妈妈口中的大银行里的存款账户压根就不存在,妈妈编织这个美丽的谎言只是为了使家人、孩子有安全感,不让孩子担忧。

           文本的语言简短,用词简单,作者以一个小女孩的口吻娓娓道来,以第一人称叙述这个短篇故事。但从这些简单的字眼中,我们可以感受到温暖。这个家庭充满着温暖,他们互帮互助;作者心中感到温暖,因为这位平凡的母亲有着积极向上,自信乐观的生活态度,她对生活有着执着的信念。母亲鼓励着大家一起互帮互助,遇到困难想办法解决,她用她的智慧深深感染着家中的每一位家人,给子女们带来了安全感、温暖和面对艰难生活的希望。当作者知道真相后,她的内心满是感激与感动。文章歌颂了母爱的伟大,颂扬、感恩了母亲对子女无私的爱和无声息的爱,母爱是渗透在生活中的许多细节之处。母亲用她的形式和方法在默默给予她的孩子安全感和温馨感。文中对母亲人物形象的刻画非常生动,语言平实真切,没有刻意的修饰和华丽的辞藻,自然妥帖,打动人心。这本书在出版后畅销了很多年,并先后有以此书为依据的舞台剧、电影、电视剧等作品面世。

    教学工具

          本次授课的班级是浏阳市第一中学高一年级2115班全体学生。学生才进入高中阶段不久,还处于从初中向高中转型阶段,正逐步适应高中的学习节奏和学习方法。2115班女生31人,男生22人,他们对英语课堂有较高的热情,积极活跃,积极举手回答问题。他们也喜欢英语,意识到了英语学习的重要性。学生的英语基础较好,文本内容的解读任务对于他们来说难度不大。且学生有着较强的合作精神和探究精神,他们擅长于小组合作,面对新的学习内容时能够通过合作学习的方式探究内容。

          但学生在英语学习方面也存在一定的不足之处。第一,在这个从初中向高中转型的过渡期,他们缺乏主动思考与深层次思考的意识,需要在老师的指导下才会去辩证地、深层次地思考问题。第二,部分学生的口头表达能力有待加强。部分学生的口语流利度不足,且口头表达时的词汇提取有一定障碍。第三,学生缺乏外文原著的书籍阅读经验,大部分学生的课外阅读量不充足。

    1. Locate and describe some basic elements related to the short story, like characters, setting, plots and theme;

    2. Analyze and summarize Mom's personalities according to specific details in the story;

    3. Describe their own impression on their Mom and express their love to their Moms in touching words;

    2. Conclude and write a summary of the plot of the short story ;

    3. Locate the details that describe Mom and appreciate Mom's personalities;

    4. Understand the writer's hidden love behind the plain words and learn from the writer's writing style.

    教学过程

    T greets Ss and asks Ss to review the short story Mama and Her Bank Account  by filling the blanks.

    T asks Ss what kind of person they think Mom is.

    Remind them to go through the short story, find out the details that describe Mom and try to understand Mom's personalities.

    1). T leads Ss to think about Mom's personality by giving an example. 

     e.g. Every Saturday night Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa had brought home.

        Ss: Through this detail, we can see Mama is a wise woman. She is good at managing. She is a wise woman.


    1. Ask Ss to work in a group of 4 and find out other details that describe Mom.Then Ss discuss in groups in 4 minutes to think out some words, phrases or sentences to describe Mom's personality.

    T presents some lines describing Mom's action, language, and expressions. 

    When the discussion is over, T invites Ss to stand up and choose the lines they have discussed. Then Ss describe Mom's personalities.

    e.g. Ss: In line, it says:________________________________________________. From this sentence, we can tell Mom is___________________________.

    Options:

    Line 7:At last, Papa would ask, "Is that all?" And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little. Mama would look up and smile, "Good. We do not have to go to the Bank."

    Mom is positive/optimistic/always looks at the bright side.


    Line 16: Mama counted out the money in the Little Bank. There was not enough. "We do not want to go to the Bank," she reminded.  

    Mom is wise enough to encourage children to volunteer to help each other.

    Line 20: Mama gave him a bright smile and wrote down a number.

    Mom is a gentle and warm mother, for her smile can give children warmth. 

    Line 23: Mama reached across the table and touched Papa's arm. Then she wrote down another figure.

    Mom is a gentle, warm, caring, and thoughtful wife.

    Line 43: Mama looked at me. "There is no account," she said. "In all my life, I've never been inside a bank."

    Mom contributes a lot to our family.

    1. Invite two students to play a competition game on the whiteboard.

    Ss read 3 specific sentences extracted from the short story and try to understand Mama's personalities, then choose the right choices according to their groups' discussion.

    1. T summarize Mom's love by presenting Ss a poem which praises Mother. 

    2. T invites Ss to read and appreciate the poem together.

    "M" is for the million things she gave me,

    "O" means only that she is growing old,

    "T" is for the tears she shed to save me,

    "H" is for her heart of purest gold,

    "E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,

    "R" means right, and right she will always be.

    1. T asks Ss what their mothers are like in their minds.

    2. T shows Ss a video sent by their Moms to let Ss feel their Mom's love and invites  Ss to think about the experiences when they were touched by their mothers.

    T invites Ss to write a letter to show thanks  and love to their mothers and later send it to their mothers.
