     Welcome to the unit板块通过两则清单列举了“讲诚信、负责任”的具体行为,以此激发学生对单元话题的探究欲望。Reading板块改编自美国著名作家欧·亨利的同名短篇小说,通过讲述两位老友二十年后赴约的故事,引导学生理解信守诺言和忠于职守的意义。本单元卷首的名人名言出自美国语言学家、哲学家诺姆·乔姆斯基,意为:“过诚实正直的生活是每一个正派人的责任。”这句话旨在说明诚实正直对一个人品行的重要性。

    By the end of this class, my students will be able to:

    1.  identify honest and responsible acts, and deepen their understanding of being honesty and responsible through reading the short story;

    2.  analyze the plot of the short story, and identify O. Henry’s techniques of writing short stories;

    3.  appreciate the ending of the short story;

    4.  write a unexpected and profound ending for this story.

    Step 1. Leading in

    1. Watch a video clip about The Gift of the Magi, and answer some questions:

     (1) Who wrote this short story?

     (2) What virtues are displayed in this story?

    2. What other moral virtues do we value in our daily life?

    3. Read the following acts, and decide whether they are Honesty (H) or Responsibility (R).

    4. What do you think is the relationship between honesty and responsibility according to the descriptions?

    Step 2. Pre-reading

    1. Predicting: Look at the picture and the title, and ask the students to predict:

    (1) What may the story be about?

    (2) What may happen after twenty years?

    2. Introducing: Introduce to the students the author and the background of this short story.

    (1) About O. Henry   (2) About the background

    Step 3. While-reading: Understanding the story:

    1. Listen and find the setting and characters of the story.

    2. Check their understanding of the story by checking the answers in A1 and A2.

    Step 3. Post-reading:

    1. Questions for thinking:

    (1) Read the note from the ending, and answer:

       Why couldn’t Jimmy arrest Bob himself?

    (2) What do you think is the message of the short story?

    2. Writing a continuation:

    Supposing the story did not end here, what would happen next?

    Please discuss with your partner and write an ending for the story.
