The United Nations at age 75
In June, 1945, representatives of 50 countries, including China, met in San Francisco of the United States and signed “the United Nations Charter”. On 24 October, 1945, the United Nations (UN) officially came into existence.
The UN is built on three pillars (支柱). The first one is peace. Established at the dawn of the Cold War, the UN has become an essential forum for dialogue and plays an important role in keeping international peace. The second one is human rights. In 1948, the UN General Assembly approved “the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”, which set out for the first time the fundamental rights, including civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. The third pillar is development. According to “the United Nations Charter”, member countries are committed to promoting social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.
To promote economic development, the UN supported developing countries with technical assistance, an activity that became institutionalized with the creation of “the United Nations Development Programme” in 1965. The UN supports the creation of a fairer global economic system and it has become the world’s foremost platform for discussing and implementing changes to the world economic order.
